The Brooklyn-based Lorenzo Jackson Foundation's mission is to encourage young adults living with HIV/AIDS to move forward with their lives through pursuing their educational goals. Founded by successful advertising exec, Alex Everett, the Lorenzo Jackson Foundation endeavors to help out as many youngsters as possible get a college education in spite of their health status. The organization is named after Everett’s late uncle, a New York-based performing artist, who was a positive impact on Everett as a youngster.
The foundation takes applications from prospective college-bound students who have HIV/AIDS and who have at least a 2.5 GPA. The candidates are later interviewed for college scholarships. The organization plans to expand and start a mentoring program for kids living with HIV/AIDS in the coming year. Everett wants to propel LJF to greater heights by opening up learning centers, establishing programs in other U.S. cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles, and to eventually give the foundation an international presence.
Everett and his staff have started a one million dollar campaign for the foundation last year. The organization has held speed dating events and has held large galas in order to bring in support. Everett and his staff have been diligent and persistent in their efforts to meet their goal. The foundation is planning more star-studded events in the upcoming year.
